Systems change idea !

Yellowstone National Park was plagued by defoliation, erosion and an unbalanced ecosystem, but everything changed when wolves were reintroduced to the park in 1995. How ? Watch this:

Takeaways:

  • Systems change is not intuitive. You cannot know what will cause a huge impact without deep knowledge.
  • It takes time. Wolves hunt deer’s , vegetation grows, soil erosion decreases, etc etc. It is slow but it’s a change that stays.

Idea : Introduction of non-profit businesses in the Economic system.
(See point 1 of takeaway. The Idea will not make sense initially.)

Non-profit businesses are our Wolves. These are businesses that sell anything and everything but are non-profit in nature. They could be selling packaged Chips or softdrinks or Cars.., whatever normal businesses are into.

Since, they are a non-profit, whatever they sell will have no profit motive. You can expect that the price is a genuine reflection of the cost incurred. The prices at which a non-profit business sells items would be lower than competitors. They will begin to eat into business of competitors. Recall, wolves hunting down deer’s.

Deer’s stop moving into areas where Wolves are present. An example of the equivalent in our economic system is : “ Private universities are a minority compared to public universities in Germany. Statistically, private universities share less than 10% of all higher education institutions in Germany.”

The deer’s don’t or can’t enter the “higher education” segment which is run in a non-profit or low-cost or actually a ‘free’ manner in Germany by the Wolf called Government.

The result, is that these areas are not exploited. New growth takes place : Less exploited people become wealthier and gain more freedom to do what they want. When people begin to do what they want or like instead of doing things due to necessity, quality of works done in society improves.

More people will begin to favor doing business with these new non-profits due to ethical & moral reasons. Monopolies like Amazon will begin to have lesser impact. Read, Wolves also killed Coyotes.

An eco-system balance helped the National park to revive. But our economic system is man made. The wolves in our system i.e the non-profit businesses are a new species. The changes will be different and more drastic in our fragile man-made world than in the resilient nature. I look forward to the day when these wolves will be launched into the economic system.
